These two black stump bears Eric carved with his chainsaw are seen as one drives up to the client’s home. Jeff started woodcarving over 30 years ago, and still enjoys carving these one of a kind bears. All original wood bears are carved from big, dead, dry ponderosa pine logs. Jeff’s bears can be found throughout the US and Canada, most national parks, and even Disney World. Carvings are made from natural wood products and are stained with a natural oil-based deck stain.

The expressions of these bears are full of cheerful curiosity. This bear has lots of personality, and with a little imagination, you can create numerous variations. It is also easy to switch him up a bit by changing his pose. While my bear turns at the hips, you can also turn his head. It’s simple to carve the different poses if you keep track of the spine and use that as your center line.

Thank you, Jon, for commissioning such a fun piece of art. This picture features sculptures of a small family of black bears. The stumps from which the carvings are carved are from trees that a micro burst of storms blew down about three years ago.

The client wanted Eric to create this adorable family of black bears frolicking in the front flower garden. When I started getting requests for handcarved bears, I carved them using models and patterns. Those first attempts were so bad that the fireplace rejected them. I decided to create my own version, depicting a bear how I thought it should look. His silly attitude and scruffy fur make him a fun project to carve. Happy Bear is approximately 3 feet of chainsaw carved fun.

If you change the shape of his eyes, making them oval, egg-shaped, or square instead of round, his whole attitude changes. You can even carve a holiday bear by adding a Santa hat for a festive, seasonal touch. Here we have a chainsaw carving of a bear who is just standing up to take a peek at what’s going on around him. Perhaps another bear is coming his way, or maybe a hiker has crossed his path; in any event, he’s just a curious guy and definitely not interested in bothering anyone. Eric wanted to depict the love and care that Momma Bear has for her cub much like moms all over the world who care for their little „cubs“. This chainsaw carved sculpture of a family of bears climbing a spruce tree was one of Eric’s first large carvings. It stands approximately 12 feet tall and inspired many smaller versions of the sculpture. Jon Van Zyle, Alaskan artist famous for painting images of the Iditarod and other gorgeous Alaskan wildlife, commissioned Eric to sculpt with his chainsaw a very specific bear pose. The inspiration for this cedar carving was to capture a bear just as he was beginning to rise from a crouching position to survey his world. Mr. Van Zyle was very pleased with this piece and in fact it was one of the more popular sculptures during the summer of 2009.
